Introduction


We use the verb to be to express:
  1. Identification
  2. Age
  3. Descriptions
  4. Places and Locations
  5. Occupations
See few examples below.

1) Identification
E.g.:

Hi! My name is Albert Einstein.

He is Carlos.

They are Rebecca and Brian.


2) Age
E.g.:

I am 24 years old.

He is 17.

They are 19 years old.

3) Description
E.g.:

I'm tall

Stephen Hawking is intelligent.

They are twins.
 


4) Places and Locations
E.g.:

I'm in Brazil.

Carlos is on the bus.

They are at home.


5) Occupations
E.g.:

He is a doctor.

I am a singer.

They are engineers.
Check the conjugations:

I am (I'm)
You are (You're)
He is (He's)
She is (She's)
It is (It's)
We are (We're)
You are (You're)
They are (They're)

E.g.:

I'm a student.
You're a teacher
He's an engineer
She's an architect.
It's a cute dog.
We're doctors.
You're singers.
They're friends

 

Interrogative form of the Verb To be:


Am I a good engineer?
Are you Brazilian?
Is he a good dancer?

Negative form of the Verb To be:


I am not an engineer or I'm not an engineer.
You are not tired or You aren't tired.
She is not tall or She isn't tall


 
Hints!
We use:
a = before consonant sounds
an = before vowel sounds.
