English Lesson 05: Present Continuous

Neste post é apresentado os principais conceitos gramaticais do Present Continuous da lingua Inglesa. Enjoy!

Introduction

We use the Present Continuous for actions that are happening at this moment, right now or for future sentences.

The structure is:

verb to be + main verb + ing

E.g.:

Mary is working now.

The boys are playing in the yard right now.

I am traveling to Paris.

Check some spelling rules for verb + ing:

1) Add ing to the base form:
E.g.:
drink = drinking
fly = flying
open = opening
study = studying
eat = eating
wear = wearing

2) Verbs finished in e, omit the letter e and add ing
E.g.:
write = writing
dance = dancing
make = making

Exceptions:
be = being
see = seeing

3) Verbs finished in CVC (consonant + vowel + consonant), double the last consonant + ing:
E.g.:
run = running
get = getting
shop = shopping

Exceptions:
CVC finished with Y.
E.g.:
play=playing

CVC Finished with X.
E.g.:
fix = fixing

CVC finished with W.
E.g.:
follow = following

4) verbs finished in ie, change ie to Y and add ing.
E.g.:
lie = lying
die = dying
tie = tying

Pay Attention!

It's not possible to use the Present Continuous with some verbs:

want, like, need, know, hope, imagine, love, prefer.

They mean senses, emotions and desires. In those cases, use them in the Simple Present.

E.g.:
Correct: I love you.
Incorrect: I am loving you

Negative Form

Use the verb to be in the negative form.
E.g.:

Mary isn't working now.
They aren't travelling to Paris now.

Interrogative Form

Put the verb to be before the subject.
E.g.:

Is Mary working now?
Are they travelling to Paris now?
