English Lesson 04: Directions


Neste post é apresentado as principais formas de indicar direções em Inglês. Também como aplicar as expressões "There is" e "There are". Enjoy!



Introduction


When we need to ask information or given information about places is important to know about how to indicate directions. Check the commons directions and indications bellow:

Turn right

Turn left 

Cross the street 

Pass by the park/Go past the park

Go ahead/Go straight/Go along

Go down the street

On
E.g.: That house is on Einstein street.

Across
E.g.: The bank is across the bakery.

Next to
E.g.: The cat is next to the dog.

Behind
E.g.: The man is behind the wall.

Between
E.g.: The kid is between the dogs.

Far from
E.g.: My house is far from the downtown.

There is/There are


We use there is or there are to indicate that something exists.

Singular case

There is = Singular

We use there is with a/an.
E.g.: 
There is a bank nearby.

Plural case
There are =  Plural

We use there are with some/any.

Some = affirmative case.
Any = negative and interrogative case.

E.g.:
Affirmative singular:
There is a mall across the gas station.

Negative singular:
There isn't a bakery next to my home.

Interrogative singular:
Is there an art gallery next to my home?
Yes, there is.
or
No, there isn't.

Affirmative plural:
There are some churches near here.


Negative plural:
There aren't any stores near here.

Interrogative plural:
Are there any bakeries near here?
Yes, there are.
or
No, there aren't
